Poached eggs are my absolute favourite way to eat eggs. A touch of salt on a nice piece of sourdough creates a simple pleasure that is hard to beat. Naturally, I was eager to try the new food offering at Social Refuge.
I ordered the poached eggs on sourdough, and the presentation was right on par with other top foodie spots across Manchester. The eggs were poached beautifully. They arrived nicely formed with a perfect runny yolk and served on tasty toasted sourdough with a drizzle of simple smoked oil.
For me, poached eggs rely heavily on seasoning. These lacked a little salt initially, but a quick trip to the bar for a salt packet sorted that right out. Since eggs are mostly protein, they can taste quite plain without that seasoning or farm-fresh intensity. Once salted, the dish was delicious.
I love what Matt and the team have created at Social Refuge, and I am excited to see how their food offering evolves. The pricing is competitive and consistent with other city centre venues offering similar quality. Better yet, I used my Canal Street VIP card for 10% off the bill. This made the meal a fantastic value.
Definitely worth adding to your Manchester breakfast and brunch venues list.
