Women in Comedy Festival, Fierce Bar, Thomas Street, 12 October 2024.
“Forget Peru, yer not going!! Think Rhyl.”
Lulu Simons is comfortable on stage and gave a confident performance of her work in progress, a very funny exploration of how people could achieve poverty tourism on their own doorstep rather than heading over to south east Asia for their gap year. It’s an excellent concept which has the makings of something really incredible as more material is added and it evolves into a full-length gig. Lulu reminded us of Victoria Wood in her observational comedy and great comic timing. She’s warm and natural with her audience and we can’t wait to see where she takes this show next.
The second half of this gig was Rachel Smith’s set, a cerebral walk-through her life, menopause and queer identity in a heterosexual life. This was an entertaining and thought-provoking cross between stand up and a TED talk (meant in the best possible way). Rachel’s honest reflections on her experience of menopause resonated well with the mostly female audience.
The room was full for these two comedians and there was an encouraging and relaxed atmosphere in this great comedy venue. Well worth it.
