The Deansgate
The Deansgate has always been a bit of an icon. Red brick sitting on top of green and pale yellow tile, ribbons of fairy lights waterfall it’s façade, it’s dwarfed by most of it’s neighbours.
Traditional pub sitting side by side sky-scraping hotel, The Hilton. Inside too is relatively traditional – the dark wood panelling, and central bar lightened just enough with a deep teal that is echoed from the ground floor, to the open rooftop space.
It’s traditional enough to suit those who love a good ‘old man pub’, but that’s tempered with pockets of bright light, and an instagrammable flower wall upstairs (because why not). Food is mix of pub grub – sticky pickle sausage rolls, fish and chips, burgers, steak and ale pie – and some quirky (but apt) little additions – pretzel with beer cheese, pulled mushroom chilli and karaage chicken. All great pairings with good beer. We can definitely recommend the pretzel (though we could do with a vat of the beer cheese to be honest), chicken wings and salmon and cheddar fishcakes, and might have our eyes on the Open Camembert & Prosciutto Sandwich and grilled cheese toastie when we come back (in case you didn’t notice, we might have a thing for cheese).
When it comes to drinks, as you’d expect there’s plenty of choice on the taps, a healthy wine list, and the cocktail menu offers plenty of choice too. I was also thrilled to see no and low offerings – I must admit to enjoying something distinctly more grown up than cola or a lime and soda when I’m off the booze, and those on offer, including the Pink Berry Spritz are definitely worth it.This lovely little boozer is likely to become a favourite whether you need a quick break, something more substantial, or even a spot to work from. And as everyone is welcome, it’s a must for us.
