Would you hold hands in public?
July 2023
My name is Byron and I am a gay documentary filmmaker from the University of Salford. I am seeking contributors for my final research film. The film will ask one question: HOW FREE ARE WE? This will be seen through the lens of public displays of affection, like holding hands. Despite Pride events and great steps forward in acquiring our formal freedoms, it is still unique to see a gay couple holding hands outside of “safe” areas, and sometimes even
in them. While looking around, you may see many heteronormative couples in small acts of unconscious, easy, and loving public displays of affection.
I am asking the community to get in touch with me and share your thoughts and opinions on public displays of affection and the possible consequences thereof. Has anything negative happened to you when you’ve become visible through such a display, (holding hands, hugging, kissing)? Is it still a private act or does it become politicised? Is it still a generally threatening environment, or do you feel comfortable and relaxed doing so? I am wanting to
speak to anyone from the LGBTQI+ community, singles or couple or thruples. There is a focus on gay men but I am eager to hear the whole gamut of stories.
This phase of the project needs to be completed by the 20 th July – so please feel free to get in touch before then. Please contact Byron through his email address:
