I should be so lucky at Opera House Mcr
November 2023
I should be so lucky, lucky lucky lucky to have seen this show! (Sorry I couldn’t resist)
The debut of new musical ‘I should be so lucky’ premiered in Manchester this month and last night we had the pleasure of attending the press night at the Opera House and pleasure, it absolutely was! I’ve not felt such a sense of joy and fun from a trip to the theatre in a really long time.
Some of the greatest hits of the 1980s from music legends Kylie, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley and more have been woven into this new story of love, loss, betrayal and forgiveness and it’s a real treat. In brief Ella, the gorgeous bride to be finds herself jilted at the alter by the groom to be, Nathan on her big day. Her friends, to pick her up decide to use the pre paid for honeymoon and jet off to a paradise resort in Turkey. Shortly after Nathan is in hot pursuit with his loveable best friend to try and win her back.
Some might say the storyline is predictable but in all honesty I didn’t get one bit. It was fun and all of the characters were fleshed out and I enjoyed every single one of them. It’s actually really hard to pick a standout as every single person on stage was a delight and they all delivered amazing vocal performances.
In terms of sheer fun factor, Spencer, the hotel manager as played Jamie Chapman is hilarious and I found myself chucking every time he was on stage - brilliant. The legend herself, Kylie Minogue also gets a bigger part in the show than you’d expect (pre recorded unfortunately) but still a pleasant surprise.
The show is still here until the 25th November and if you like camp, cheese and some of the best music of the 1980s I can’t recommend this show more. It was honestly superb and I’d happily see it again.
