Fantastically Great Women at The Lowry
Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World
The world premiere of brand-new musical Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World stops off at The Lowry’s Quays Theatre on the second week of its UK tour. This energetic 80-minute romp through history offers the opportunity for its cast to play a range of diverse roles, and for the audience to be reminded of (or educated on) the impact women have made on the modern world.
When Jade (Kudzai Mangombe) finds her way into the local museum’s closed-off Gallery of Greatness she discovers icons of the past to inspire her future, each with a story to tell… Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, Rosa Parks, Marie Curie, Emmeline Pankhurst and a host of others.
Based on the picture book by Kate Pankhurst, Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World brings the pages to life in this vibrant production. Amy Hodge’s direction keeps the action speeding along, making the most of the colourful set and all its hidden secrets. The live band (led by Rhiannon Hopkins) is set above the main stage but is integral to the action below, accompanying and being integrated into the 10 newly written songs.
This original, enthusiastic play with songs is just starting out and will settle in during its tour. There were a few technical issues, and the young cast need to work on the clarity of their vocals and dialogue, but as a whole, this female-empowering production has a clear following drawn in by the success of the books (based on the young girls in the audience) and had many people on their feet clapping along to the final mega-mix.
