This the start of the To Be Free tour, with a new album Hazel Eyes for Sam Smith, returning after a vocal cord injury in 2023. Albert Hall is a stunning venue and we had full view of it upstairs in the seating area, a sold out night of two, packed with adoring fans who were super excited about this much anticipated show.

There was a short but entertaining acoustic support session from Will Parker ( who headlines his own show at Deaf Institute on 30th Sept ) who has a fantastic voice and kept the eager audience engaged.

Sam arrived onstage to an ecstatic welcome from the crowd, they were clearly delighted and appreciative of the love being shown by the fans.

There was a short break whilst a microphone was replaced, dealt with humour and patience by all, Sam left the stage for a short time, then started with Love is a Stillness from the new album, a beautiful and soulful song which had the audience rapt attention.

Followed by a classic, Not the Only One, which was sung back to them with gusto by pretty much all in the room. So much energy and enthusiasm was lovely to witness.

Then another 17 songs seamlessly blended, both old and new album work. Every single one was a delight.

I was struck by how many musical styles there were being beautifully showcased, one minute slow soulful and heartfelt, stunning piano, gospel singing with rock guitar parts, the next sexy and earthy nightclub, perfect to dance to. Sam has an incredible voice with a breathtaking range.

Our favourites were Unholy ( WOW! ) Oh Mother, HIM, Too Good at Goodbyes, and the final song Stay With Me was incredibly emotional and a wonderful end to a perfect example of a music concert.

Songs were sung by the fans back at Sam, but their voice and the musicians were always able to be heard. No encore but it ended perfectly without one.

Backing singers were superb and slick, and musicians were excellent, worked brilliantly together, there was a real feeling of joy and pride in their work and every single face in the crowd had a smile for the whole show.

Have to also mention the costume changes. Initially wore an imposing heavy wool overcoat, removed to reveal leather trousers, pirate boots that worked so well. A cowboy hat added later gave Country music vibes then a dark chocolate brown silk dress was just perfect for the latter part of the show. They pulled off every look with fantastic confidence that was a joy to see.

Absolutely incredible ‘must see’ show. Follow on dates from 8th to 19th September at London Coliseum.

A huge thank you to all the staff at the Albert Hall venue, super friendly and welcoming, particularly in the accessible area upstairs where they really do look after everyone so beautifully.
