Each performer is an internationally acclaimed dancer, educator and choreographer in her own right, and together they create an ensemble of breathtaking unity. Their energy never falters, holding the audience spellbound from the opening moments until the thunderous standing ovation that brought the performance to its exhilarating conclusion.
The production draws upon a rich tapestry of Sinéad O’Connor’s recorded music, poetry and spoken word. Her unmistakable voice—capable of soaring from an almost supernatural falsetto into the gentlest whisper—continues to possess the same emotional power that made “Nothing Compares 2 U” the defining global hit of 1990. Yet this performance reaches far beyond her musical achievements. It embraces the woman who stood fearlessly for human rights, women’s equality, anti-racism, peace, and justice for survivors of child abuse, never compromising her principles regardless of the personal cost.
Tom Visser’s magnificent lighting and scenic design proves that simplicity can be profoundly theatrical. Using only subtle, beautifully judged lighting and four wooden church pews, constantly rearranged by the dancers into ever-changing formations, he creates an endlessly evolving landscape that perfectly supports the emotional and political narrative. Every image feels purposeful; every shadow meaningful.
The choreography itself is exhilarating. Sonia Tayeh fuses explosive athleticism with moments of haunting stillness, allowing grief, rage, compassion, resilience and hope to flow
seamlessly across the stage. The dancers become both individuals and a collective force, embodying O’Connor’s lifelong commitment to truth and fearless expression.
Born in Dublin on 8 December 1966, Sinéad O’Connor changed popular music forever with her debut album The Lion and the Cobra (1987). Her striking shaved head became an iconic image, while her genre-defying artistry blended alternative rock, Irish folk, reggae and hip-hop into something uniquely her own. More importantly, she was a woman of extraordinary courage. Whether exposing the Catholic Church’s cover-up of child abuse by tearing up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on live television or championing human rights decades before many others, she remained steadfast in her convictions. Her integrity and intensity defined both her art and her life.
This production captures precisely that spirit. It honours not only the artist but the activist, the poet, the truth-teller and the compassionate soul who refused to be silenced. Rather than mourning her passing, THE SURGE celebrates the continuing force of her voice and the relevance of her message today.
