We’re looking for a local LGBTQIA+ artist or artists to bring life and vibrancy to this bridge in our iconic Manchester’s Gay Village. Located on Sackville Street, this bridge is a gateway into the Village and has the potential to be an important focal point that immediately informs visitors that they have arrived in Manchester’s Gay Village.
The artist(s) will be commissioned by representatives from the local community, Friends of Sackville Gardens, Friends of Manchester’s Gay Village, The Village Licensed Business Association, Manchester Village Pride and LGBT Foundation (with support from Manchester City Council).
This is a community-backed project, being led by businesses and partners in the Village, as part of shared efforts to deliver on Manchester’s Gay Village Action Plan. So, this should be taken into account when considering the scope, scale and cost of the proposal.
The primary vision for this heritage bridge is for an interpretation of the progress flag and a brief history and celebration of Manchester’s LGBTQIA+ community on the metal panels.
We are keen to see unique and creative interpretations of the Progress Flag, which may also incorporate a time line of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ History that captures the spirit of the community and make the bridge a special feature in the heart of Manchester’s Gay Village that visitors are drawn to. We would also like to see a sensitive incorporation of the existing heritage features, including the central plaque, within the design.
There is also a potential opportunity to curate a piece of art or mural on the other side of the bridge, on the bricks that sit between Canal Street and Sackville Gardens.
We are keen to hear from artists on what design they envisage for this space. We would like to see something that captures what this area means to people. One suggestion has been a mural of the LGBT Foundations Amazing Village Angels.
We are open to a consistent theme across both locations or two separate and unique designs.
If you are interested in sharing a vision for this secondary location as well, please let us know when you contact us.
If you’re an artist and think you can bring this vision to life, then please contact:
