If you’re seeking an elevated dining experience in the heart of Manchester, look no further than Malmaison Deansgate. Ascend seven floors to discover Sora, a chic, contemporary venue where the city skyline unfolds in front of you.

As you step into the space, Sora’s warm and inviting atmosphere envelops you, a blend of sleek modern decor, pop art and plush seating. The menu features an array of pan-Asian small plates, a testament to the chef’s creativity and passion for fresh, vibrant ingredients. We dove straight in with the sea bass crudo, delicate slices melting in our mouths, enhanced by the peppery notes of nasturtium. The satay chicken skewers from the Robata grill were tender and served with a luscious peanut sauce that was a delightful balance of nutty and rich, and sweet and sour. There are a range of dishes for sushi lovers, perhaps our favourite was the Firecracker roll – packed with a fiery kick of sriracha, the more subtle taste of flamed sea bass, spicy tuna, spring onion, and tobiko. We also dove head first into the grilled pointed cabbage from the Specials menu – that proved a hit. Sweet charred cabbage, balanced with rich truffle and creamy tofu.

Whilst the food menu leans heavily on Asian influences, the drinks menu has a wider international feel. From signature cocktails through to crisp Italian Prosecco and a sparkling alcohol-free German Riesling – meaning that being sober means you don’t have to miss out.

Our culinary journey didn’t end there. Descending back to street level, we stepped into Bar & Grill, a welcoming bistro exuding classic American charm. Though the views of the town hall were obscured by ongoing construction, the warm, intimate atmosphere more than made up for it. The menu, a carnivore’s dream, boasted the finest cuts of prime British beef, but it was the salmon that stole the show. It flaked effortlessly under our forks, the rich lemon dill butter adding a touch of sunshine to each bite. We couldn’t resist the flat iron steak, its meaty flavour enhanced by a seared crust and tender interior. And the signature burger? A masterpiece of juicy Angus beef, melted cheddar, and all the fixings, it was pure indulgence. Alongside our dishes we opted for a smooth Provençal rosé and a bold Italian red.

Whether you’re in the mood for a sophisticated soirée at Sora or a relaxed gathering at Bar and Grill, Malmaison Deansgate delivers an experience that’s sure to impress. The attentive and friendly service, reasonable prices, and 20% discount for Canal St Card holders are just the icing on the cake. So go ahead, treat yourself to an evening of pure indulgence at this urban oasis – your taste buds will thank you.
