The brasserie at Maya has a revamped but comprehensive menu to suit most tastes and palates and covers lunch or evening dining.

We both started with the smoked salmon which came with crème fraiche and capers, and shared a side of the pain du jour. The salmon portions were generous, but the bread came as two small chunks that looked a bit lost.

Next, we had the steak frites and the Maya burger.  My steak was cooked to perfection, nicely pink and tender, and served with Café de Paris butter, crispy fries, and peppery watercress as a garnish. A nicely uncomplicated combination that just worked. As is the trend these days, the burger came in a brioche bun although at Maya it’s not too sweet, and it was loaded with the usual addons. It doesn’t come with anything else though, and if you want chips they’re extra.

We couldn’t manage a dessert – next time perhaps as they did look very tempting.

The wine list is quite short, but, if you want to throw caution to the wind, anything from the main restaurant’s list is available on request.

Service was very attentive without being too intrusive and the very comfortable room fronts Canal Street if you want to watch the world go by.

Canal St Card holders like ourselves can also enjoy a 10% discount in the bistro at all times.
