The story of ‘The Coffee Shop Musical‘ unfolds in the uncannily appropriate setting of a coffee shop, a place of comfort and familiarity to many. This innovative work provides an intriguing account of the human experience examined through the eyes of artificial intelligence. The stage is prepared for a one-of-a-kind musical journey that introduces us to a colourful cast of characters, including the owner of a coffee shop, a new graduate, a freelancer, and an influencer. Each character adds to a story as diverse and complicated as humanity itself, with their own stories. All of this is more than just a show; it’s an opportunity to see things from a unique viewpoint, a chance to laugh, relate, and find the remarkable in the commonplace.
Alex James Ellison, who plays the coffee shop owner and the graduate, gives a performance that is just as attractive as it is fascinating. Ellison’s acting and singing talents bring his character’s story to life, guided by the AI narrator. As a freelancer, Harriet Caplan-Dean lends her own voice to the tale, boosting the musical part of the production.
The humour in the performance is nicely covered, with the AI frequently throwing lighthearted barbs at human nature. The idea is to make the audience laugh while also making them feel connected. The use of a coffee shop as a background adds a distinct and playful element to the performance, increasing its appeal.
The show’s realism, which took place at Takk on Tariff St. as part of the Greater Manchester Fringe, is absolutely outstanding. It immerses the audience in the story, making them feel like participants rather than passive observers.
The musical emphasises the importance of personal interaction and the necessity to break out of boring routines. Harriet Caplan-Dean, who previously played the dance captain in ‘Six the Musical,’ plays a powerful influencer. Her portrayal evokes empathy for the difficulties that influencers experience, bringing complexity to her character while also playfully showing the quirks of their lifestyle.
Alex James Ellison injects fun into the event by changing his clothes quickly while engaging the audience. Both actors provide a sense of relatability to their roles, and their vocal harmonies are excellent. In addition, both performers are hilarious as their feline alter egos.
There are no more dates for Manchester but please keep checking their website for additional Caplan-Dean and Ellison performances around the UK. If you happen to be in Nottingham on July 7 (tonight), take advantage of the opportunity to experience their genius firsthand.
