This captivating film shows Link’s journey with his brother, Travis, to run from his abusive and homophobic father. Link believed his mother was dead until he makes a discovery. He runs away so fast he has nothing but an envelope with an address to find her.
Along the way, Link meets Pamsay, a Mi’kmaw teen about the same age but was rejected for being gay. One of them ran away and one of them was pushed away which shows the audience sees their ability to confide in each other and learn. The chemistry is unmissable, but Link is afraid to let his guard down.
Link is of mixed race; his mother is from the Mi’kmaq territory, and he doesn’t speak the language. His journey is more than just geography. Wildhood shows Link’s discovery of himself as a queer, mixed-race individual who doesn’t know his roots.
The film moved a little too slowly for my taste, but the slow evolution of characters worked to keep it engaging.
