PROKOFIEV Piano Concerto No.3

RACHMANINOFF Symphony No.2

Stoller Hall Friday evening for a concert rescheduled from 2 years ago with Jonathan Bloxham conductor – luckily able to also be there on the new date.

Testament paid to the orchestra’s fortitude in the face of adversity (mostly made up of Chetham’s students and some drafted in from RNCM) as many unavoidable changes had to be made as well as new rehearsal spaces due to a recent fire at Chethams.

Very excited audience, lots of proud parents and friends made for a great atmosphere.

First piece was a new contemporary one with the bonus of the composer being present and thanked warmly at the finish by the audience and orchestra.

The soloist was a percussionist and the piece was unusual vibrant and exciting.

At one point the soloist was playing several instruments including an aluminium stepladder, dustbin and frypan! Lots of fun to listen to and watch.

The later Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff pieces were stunningly executed, the virtuosity of the whole orchestra was spellbinding.

The soloist playing piano during the Prokofiev piece was outstandingly good. It was possible to completely immerse yourself in the music and was such a pleasure to see such a young orchestra enjoying performing after such a long time under restrictions. Gorgeous restful space and pin sharp acoustics

An absolute stormer of an evening.

Thanks to all FOH staff, particularly box office and duty manager who were so helpful and accommodating.
