THIS IS NOT A LOVE STORY. IT’S THE 90s

It’s the late 90s, New Labour are in power and the ‘gay age of consent’ is causing chaos in parliament. Meanwhile teenagers up and down the country are cracking on regardless – making out, making up, but mainly making mistakes! Steffan comes out to his straight best friend, Typey, on a lads’ holiday in Ibiza – starting a chain of events that will change the lives of four young friends forever.

From the writer of Absolute Certainty? and director of Canal Street Lonely Hearts Club, this is a story of lust, lies, hurt and revenge – some kind of love story!

Featuring a young cast of Manchester based actors, Kind of Love is presented by Qweerdog – one of the city’s leading and award-winning LGBTQ+ theatre companies led by writer and director Stewart Campbell who himself is also an actor, writer and director. He set up Qweerdog in 2017 whilst graduating from Manchester School of Theatre to stage a one-act play at Greater Manchester Fringe, Absolute Certainty? – which went on to be shortlisted for the WriteForTheStage – New Writing Award and in a longer format, it headlined the first ever LGBTQ+ Turn On Fest at Hope Mill in 2020. Building on its success, Stewart wrote and performed in his next play, OUT – which was also shortlisted for the New Writing Award. Stewart has since branched out into producing work from other writers. Initially, directing and producing For I Have Sinned at Buxton Fringe Festival and launching Qweer Shorts, a regular night of LGBTQ+ short plays, starting at The King’s Arms, Salford then moving to the larger Hope Mill Theatre in 2023 – where the event has gone from strength to strength. Last year he directed and produced Canal Street Lonely Hearts Club to great acclaim, a brand-new version of the Jonathan Harvey play that was originally set in 1990s’ London.
