The Refuge at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel strikes the perfect balance between relaxed dining and a touch of class, all while capturing the vibrant spirit of Manchester. The space itself is an inviting space for dinner. They’ve masterfully blended modern industrial design with subtle nods to the city’s history, creating a stunning space. Lots of natural light pours in, making it feel open and airy, but the clever layout and cosy seating still give you a sense of privacy.
The menu is a celebration of seasonal, local produce, with dishes that evoke cosy autumn evenings and a hint of bonfire night nostalgia. The star of the show for me was the Mojo Rojo pork belly with miso aubergine. The pork, smoky and infused with char siu flavours, was succulent and well balanced between sweet and savoury. We were also pleasantly surprised by the pie and black beans – it was a comforting dish with a sophisticated twist of flavours and textures. While the food might not be as groundbreaking as some Michelin-starred places, it’s incredibly well-prepared and satisfying.
The real highlight of The Refuge, though, is the service. Our host, Lucia, was an absolute delight – friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our meal. The whole team’s dedication to accommodating dietary needs, especially allergies, was really impressive and shows a true commitment to making everyone feel welcome.
After dinner we cheekily had two cocktails in the Winter Garden for an after-dinner drink, a space of warmth and greenery amidst the urban bustle. Our classic Negroni was a masterful blend of bitter and sweet, a fitting end to our meal. My Sunset Grove, an aromatic blend of fruit and Seedlip 0% spirit, was equally charming, a testament to the bar’s dedication to crafting cocktails as memorable as the cuisine.
The Refuge really captures the essence of Manchester’s modern dining scene. It’s a place where you can just be yourself and enjoy a fantastic meal in an iconic setting. It’s perfect for a date night or a casual catch-up with friends, offering a memorable experience without any of the stuffy pretence you might find elsewhere.
If you’re looking to experience Manchester’s vibrant food scene in a space that blends history, elegance, and genuine hospitality, The Refuge is an absolute must-visit. Make sure you try the Mojo Rojo pork belly, and don’t hesitate to let them know about any dietary requirements – the team will go out of their way to ensure you have a wonderful time.
