New leadership, new season

The Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester today, Thursday 25 October 2012, announces plans for a new artistic direction under a newly restructured leadership team, unveiling a bold and dynamic programme for their Spring / Summer 2013 season.

The Spring / Summer season begins on 20 February 2013 with To Kill A Mockingbird, directed by rising star Max Webster, a trainee of the 2011 Regional theatre Young Directors’ Scheme at The Exchange.

Programme highlights also include the world premiere of Cannibals – a new play by Rory Mullarkey commissioned by the theatre and directed by Michael Longhurst. Henrik Ibsen’s ground-breaking masterpiece, A Doll’s House, stars Cush Jumbo who is reunited with director Greg Hersov following the hugely successful As You Like It, for which Jumbo won the 2012 Ian Charleson Award.

Blanche McIntyre, winner of the Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer in 2011, directs Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party, and Told by an Idiot’s Paul Hunter directs Too Clever by Half, the rarely-performed satire by Russian playwright, Alexandr Ostrovsky.

The season will also feature world premiere productions by two winners of the 2011 Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting: Janice Okoh’s Three Birds  in association with the Bush Theatre and directed by Sarah Frankcom, and Alistair McDowall’s Brilliant Adventures, directed by Caroline Steinbeis, winner of the 2009 JMK Award for Young Directors which is a co-production with Live Theatre, Newcastle.
