Another Co-op win

Another Co-op win

The Co-operative Group was named 'Employer of the Year' at the inaugural National Student Pride Awards, in association with Channel 4 Talent, held at The Brighton Dome on 2 March.

Voted for by students from all over the UK, the awards included categories varying from 'Journalist of the Year', 'Activist of the Year' and 'Blogger of the Year'.

The Co-operative were a proud sponsor of National Student Pride, the 43rd UK Pride event The Co-operative has sponsored or supported.

Thomas Anderson, Co-chair of The Co-operative’s inclusive employee lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) network Respect, accepted the award from Dan Gillespie Sells, lead singer of chart topping group The Feeling.

Thomas commented, "To win an award that was voted for by students is a testament to how The Co-operative is positively viewed by many people around the UK. It follows the recent news that The Co-operative is officially the most LGB friendly retailer in the UK, ranking 3rd in the 2013 Stonewall Workplace Equality Index. It was a real honour to collect the award and the enthusiasm for The Co-operative at the event was amazing to hear and see. National Student Pride was a fantastic event and the hard work and dedication of the volunteers that make it happen each year was remarkable to witness. Big thanks to the Respect network Steering Group and Respect members for arranging and supporting our involvement at the event."

Sharon Pegg, Diversity and Inclusion Manager for The Co-operative added, "Winning this award is a real testament to the work of so many people within the Group and is something we should all be immensely proud of. We aspire to be an employer of choice and this is real indicator that many students across the UK see the Group as being a great place to work and when they are ready to enter the job market or seek new opportunities, The Co-operative is an employer they would choose to bring their talents and skills to."
