Manchester theatre company wins prestigious Olwen Wymark Award after taking work online in Covid-19 pandemic

A Manchester theatre company which swapped the stage for a screen due to the Covid-19 pandemic has had its work recognised with a prestigious award.

Elysium Theatre Company has just released five new online plays, days after being announced as Olwen Wymark Award-winners by the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, for its work in supporting new writing.

one of the Monologues has LGBT+ issues at its heart, and is written and performed by two Manchester-based people.

I Just Called To Say, by Rani Moorthy and performed by Alex Townson, centres on a character who is talking to his unresponsive father via the medium of a tablet as he lies ill in hospital.

As he unburdens himself about their relationship, and the violent abuse at the heart of it, it becomes clear that the lead character's sexuality, and his father's inability to accept it, played a huge part in the fracturing of the relationship.
