Daphne the Canal St Duck: The sequel

Some weeks ago, we at Canal Street posted the story and video clip of Daphne the duck, who’d laid 10 eggs on a balcony just off Canal Street together with the subsequent hatchings and release into the wild – actually the Rochdale Canal as that’s as aquatic as it gets round here.

There is a follow up.

A month or so ago and Daphne returned and laid 4 eggs, which then became 5, then 6, then 7. Yesterday, the 27th May, the first one hatched, and overnight so did the rest – all 10 of them in the end – and the apartment owner was woken by the sound of Daphne calling the family together to flee the nest.

In true boy scout fashion, preparations had been made in the shape of a kids’ paddling pool for them to float around on, but it had sprung a leak, rendering it a bit useless.

It was only going to be a very temporary measure anyway, so we used the same strategy as last time: placing the newly born ducklings into a box and making our way down the fire stairs whilst Daphne looked down on us from the parapet.

As before, she understood what was going on and flew onto the canal below Princess Street where we decanted the new arrivals onto the water, where they joined mama and paddled away.

We think this will be it for this season, but suspect she’ll be back next year.
