LGBT FOUNDATION JOINS NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO BRING PEOPLE BACK TOGETHER AND CELEBRATE ALL WE HAVE IN COMMON

LGBT Foundation is delighted to team up with dozens of other organisations around the UK in support of The Great Get Together over the June 21 - 23 weekend.

The annual Great Get Together was established by the Jo Cox Foundation in memory of the late MP’s belief that ‘we all have more in common than that which divides us’. It seeks to bridge division and remind communities of how much they have in common by staging a series of picnics, events and meetups.

Since its launch in 2017, which has seen over a hundred thousand get togethers and almost a million people taking part, it has become a powerful symbol of national unity and community. The Great Get Together is now one of the UK’s biggest and most successful charitable projects, honouring Jo Cox by showcasing the values she championed.

LGBT Foundation believes that stronger communities, where people can get to know their neighbours and take part in activities together, is both good for the country and for us all as individuals.

The event will take place in Sackville Gardens in the heart of Manchester’s Gay Village on Sunday 23rd June from 12pm to 5pm. There will be free food, and it will involve local LGBT Sports groups providing stalls and showcases as well as bringing together local businesses. It will also include a Village walking tour, in collaboration with UK Active and Get Manchester Moving.

Paul Martin, Chief Executive of LGBT Foundation, said:

“LGBT Foundation are really proud to be partnering with the Jo Cox Foundation to host a Great Get Together right at the heart of Manchester in Sackville Gardens. As a charity that has supported lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people for nearly 40 years, and The Great Get Together’s message of tolerance, community and inclusion is one that we very much support. We open our arms to people from LGBT communities and their allies to join us for this very special event, welcoming everyone onto our rainbow picnic blanket.”

The theme of this year’s Great Get Together is ‘Let’s Get Back Together’. It’s a chance for people across the country to reconnect with old friends, families, communities and groups, and comes at a time when it’s needed most of all. Studies have repeatedly shown that Britain is more divided today than at any time since Jo’s death. Both LGBT Foundation and the Jo Cox Foundation have worked for many years to encourage social cohesion, and have often spoken on the need to bridge division and on the importance of remembering that there is always far more to unite us than there is that divides us.

Catherine Anderson, the CEO of the Jo Cox Foundation said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have LGBT Foundation as a Membership Partner. Their support is vital in helping us stage The Great Get Together which, at a time of such polarisation across the country, is such an important and powerful reminder of all that we value and share. We all need The Great Get Together now more than ever before and, with LGBT Foundation’s support, I am confident that this year’s will be our most successful yet”.
