Rocky Horror Show 2021
It’s hard to believe that The Rocky Horror Show is 48 years old! Who would have thought Richard O’Brien’s musical would become the cult global sensation that it now is. If you’ve never seen the show, or the hugely successful film version (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), this is the perfect opportunity to catch up with newly engaged lovebirds Brad Majors and Janet Weiss as they suffer a puncture on a stormy night, miles from anywhere…apart from an old castle. This is to be a night they will remember for a very long time!
This production undoubtedly blows the cobwebs off any lockdown lethargy and has the audience in full participation mode from the outset. Each production brings along new audience responses, but the classic slut, arsehole and cock will forever remain. The cast know the audience will shout out and know how to respond. Philip Franks as the Narrator shines throughout with his spot-on heckle putdowns and topical references to Boris and the inevitable virus. Ore Oduba (Brad) and Haley Flaherty (Janet) play the 50s-esq geeky couple perfectly, from demure virgins to sexually-awakened lovers. Kristian Lavercombe is impressive as a youthful Riff Raff and, of course, there is no greater campery than Frank N Furter. Stephen Webb goes full throttle in this iconic role, balancing on his high heels and strutting his corseted body seductively around the stage.
Some previous tours relied on the audience's familiarity with the script and music to cut costs and offer cheap versions. This is absolutely NOT the case here – the cast delight with strong singing voices, young talent and a genuine enthusiasm for being onstage, supported by the excellent band under the direction of Greg Arrowsmith. A belting show to re-open the Opera House.
With performances all week and a final showing at 1600 on Sunday (29th) this is the perfect excuse to party for the Pride weekend – camp, loud and proud. Slip on your fishnets and time warp your way to Transylvania.
