Aladdin: Palace Theatre Manchester.

May 2024

Aladdin and his magic carpet have arrived at the Palace Theatre for a night of spectacular entertainment. It's no small undertaking to tackle stories which have gained such cultural significance but the Disney Theatrical Group do it with style and class.

It's not possible to do a copy and paste job of the movies for the stage adaptations and nor should anyone even try to. The team have put their own twist on the musical with more than a couple of nods and winks to the real world. Aladdin's resourceful monkey Abu is split into 3 loveable rogues who form his sidekicks whilst the laughably villainous Iago becomes a human stooge to Jafar - played wonderfully by Angelo Paragoso might I add.

As for other roles that really stood out we wouldn't be able to do this review without talking about the incredible stage presence which is the Genie. From the moment Yeukayi graces the stage he eats it up! His opening number 'Friend like me' is an absolute spectacle, it is a total feast for the eyes and a fantastic way to end Act 1. Also Adam Strong is stunningly evil as Jafar.

If I had one little nit pick it's that the conclusion is wrapped up a bit too quickly and I didn't really feel much in the way of stakes. It's kind of over and done with very quickly but alas the rest of the audience seemed to absolutely lap it up.

Aladdin is here until the 7th July so you've got plenty of time to be taken on this absolutely magical ride of a show.
