We chatted to Stooshe recently

As we gear up for another Pride, one of the stand out acts from last year, Stooshe are gearing up for another assault on the charts. The new single, “Let It Go” is a summer anthem complete with a super glamourous video.

Canal St caught up with the girls to talk about their new material as well as hanging with the likes of TLC and J-Lo

1. Tell me about Let It Go

Let It Go is about living life, enjoying what it is, don’t take life too seriously and just live in the moment. We feel that most people should live like that.

2.  How was the experience of making the video, you look very glamorous

We ended up going to the south of Italy. It was absolutely lovely, you can see it in the video, it was beautiful. We were riding along the cliffs on bikes, in and out of the water, we had a good time.

3. Did you set out to make a summer anthem or did it come about by accident?

It was really organic, our album has got such a mix on it, I can’t pinpoint one sound, we get our inspiration from being who we are and we’ve carried that on to the second album. We had a writing camp a few months ago and we had some amazing people there, Carla Marie Wiliams who co-wrote Beyonce’s album and Jada who is one of our co-writers, she’s amazing. We had a few people down and were going in and out of different rooms and just got different vibes and we made half the album pretty much. It was just the vibe at the time.

4. How do you come up with the looks for your performances/videos?

I think when we like a song or we know it’s going to be the next single we envision a video. When you hear it you think, this will go perfectly with it and because we’re always on the same wavelength we bounce off each other.

I think we were in a rehearsal session and we were like, let’s think of a video, we always loved the video Wild For The Night by Rocky and wanted to incorporate it somewhere and Let It Go seemed like the perfect song to do that. We couldn’t really get to South America so we went to Italy.

As soon as we got there we were like, this is the perfect scene. We wanted it to be like us, having fun together, very natural, not too much of a storyline and just opening up at a party at a beach and it was a party, we actually had a party for a few hours.

5. You were one of the stand out acts at Manchester Pride last year, what are your memories?

We always get a good reception in Manchester, I think one of our first tour dates is there. Pride anywhere you go is amazing, the crowd are really responsive, we’ve done a few covers which we’ve got into, doing our new sound, we love coming up there. It’s all good, we love it.

6. What is the dynamic like with the three of you?

Things fall into each other’s hands, we have like a group chat and it’s pretty much whoever gets the message first does the job. We just take it turns and keep it very balanced and open, especially with the creative side. A lot of people have this stigma, people fighting over which parts, I swear to God, we are so laid back. We’re like “No you sing that one, you sing it babe,”

That is literally how it is, it is so balanced and equal we all go in and out of the usual young 20 year old girl things so we’re all on the same vibe.

7. You have comparisons with the Spice Girls, why do you think this is?

When we came out we definitely had individuality stamped onto who we were, it was all about us three, being ourselves and not conforming to the usual girl band look. It was three personalities, totally different from totally different places and it worked. I think that’s where the comparison comes from, not necessarily just the look. It was the biggest compliment when we first came out but we’ve definitely grown up, as they did, and grown into ourselves a bit more.

8. What have been the stand out moments of the last few years?

Definitely being nominated for a Brit, Best British Single was crazy. The recognition was great, it was people’s choice. The Mobo awards and we got to meet TLC and they were on our table. They came to the UK to watch us perform Waterfalls which was such a surreal experience, on a table with T-Boz and Chilli. Just being up on stage with each other and having the chance to come back with a second album because we’ve been away for so long, obviously we’re still up and coming and we haven’t hit the peak of our career yet at all so we’ve still got a lot of work to do and we’re very grateful that we were able to go away for two whole years and come back with a brand new team, feeling better than ever and give you guys the music.

9. Who has made you starstruck?

I do think talking to J-Lo, actually talking to her about Christmas and tours, that’s where you’re like “Oh we’ve overstepped the mark” now. She was very welcoming, she was so humble that we were so starstruck by that I think.

10. What does the future hold?

We have got the album that we’re just finishing off, that is coming out very soon. Hopefully another single. We’re hopefully going to be another tour next year and a European leg of it to show everyone our album.

We’ll be coming to Manchester 100%.
