Village Bake Off triumphs again

BBC Bakeoff Star Crowns Village Bakers Best in Bake Off Awards

Manchester’s Village Bakers hosted ‘The Great Village Bake Off’ on Sunday 17th August, part of Manchester Pride Fringe and was supported by The Molly House & Queen of Cakes...  was a truly spectacular event... the culmination of a huge amount of baking talent and interest from entries including:  savoury cheeseboard cheesecake, pink & black cherry chocolate cake, rainbow whoopee pies, savoury pizzas & queen mother cake among many other fabulous creations.

Judging the event was baking expert and finalist of 2013 BBC Great British Bake Off, Mr Howard Middleton whose baking knowledge was a fantastic addition to the competition and really made the event work well.

Kevin Sargent, chair of village bakers: “As a pride fringe event it was fantastic to see the LGBT community come together to share a slice of cake with friends. The Great Village Bake Off is a sign of the strong community spirit within Manchester’s Gay Village”. Bakeoff judge Howard Middleton said ‘The Village Bakers clearly took the competition very seriously indeed and the atmosphere was nail biting (sadly not a good look for the baker with the emerald talons)! In the end the worthy winners perfectly combined taste, creativity and a generous sprinkling of camp!’

The Village Bakers as a social group has in less than 2 years become an extremely well-subscribed group with participants enthusiastically presenting their baked creations each month. Paul Duffy, Manager of The Molly House explained that “The Molly House was delighted once again to support The Great Village Bake Off which is a showcase for The Village Bakers, a hugely popular community and social group”

Entry categories and winners (winning prizes kindly donated by The Co-operative Food & Queen of Cakes):

Best in Bake Off: John Reynolds with his Savoury Cheeseboard Cheesecake.

Best Sweet Entry: Neill Duncan with his Pink & Black Cherry Chocolate Cake

Best Savoury Entry: John Reynolds with his Savoury Cheeseboard Cheesecake

The funds raised were all in aid of Manchester Pride Community Fund helping local LGBT charities and community groups which will really make a difference

The Village bakers are an LGBT social group with the aim to Bake it! Bring it! Share it! Within Manchester’s Gay Village. Inspired by the Great British Bake Off, the Village Bakers was formed in November 2012 by a group of friends meeting and sharing homemade cake and lots of glasses of wine.

A true sign of its success and popularity is its current nomination for ‘community group/organisation of the year’ in the Lesbian and Gay Foundations Homo Hero Awards 2014, with community at the heart of everything they do, they are sure win this award.

The awards are an initiative promoted by the Lesbian & Gay Foundation (LGF) to acknowledge heroes within the LGBT community including businesses, volunteers, community groups & role models to name a few.  (www.lgf.org.uk/hero)
