The History of Saint Valentine's Day

The history of St Valentine's Day, from its pre-Christian origins, involving nudity and whipping, to its present incarnation as a commercial free-for-all driving huge sales of chocolate, flowers and jewellery.

Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.Below are 2 sites with more history and background.

There are very many more sources on the web, but we thought it would be fun to pick out a couple.

Just about every venue in the Gay Village will organise meals/events/themes, so please watch out on our Facebook page/Twitter and App for regular updates.
Whether you celebrate or not.. Enjoy.
