In February 2014, four theatre groups came together to stage an evening of striking, funny and inspiring new drama to highlight homophobia and promote LGBT rights in Russia.  The sell-out show was called ‘To Russia With Love: Stage’ and was performed as part of the Queer Contact festival at Contact, Manchester.

The region's most exciting theatre companies, dramatists and performers joined together for this one-off event, showcasing new writing in response to the growing oppression in Russia.  The work was inspired by true stories of people living under Russia’s homophobic laws and explored the impact on identity, love and family.

This unique performance featured four specially commissioned pieces of drama including work by Stephen M Hornby (One Abstention); Chris Hoyle (Don’t Tell The Kids); Rob Ward (Champions); and a new verbatim piece by Adam Zane (Section 6.21).

The producing companies were: Hope Theatre Company, Chris Hoyle Productions, VADA LGBTQ Community Theatre and Working Progress Theatre Company. Contact and each of the theatre companies agreed to work at cost so that any profit from the evening would be donated to help fight oppression in Russia.

The total profit from the night was just over £1100, and this will be split equally between two organisations, Human Rights Watch and Russian LGBT network.
