There’s a real lump-in-the-throat moment part-way through the first episode of Russell T Davies’s new Channel 4 drama Cucumber.

The main characters go out in Manchester city centre: cut to a bustling Canal Street at night, the trees festooned with lights, a crane shot reaching high up above the scene, the music soaring.

It’s so reminiscent of Davies‘s 1999 break-though show Queer as Folk that it can’t be a coincidence, and it may well stop you right in your tracks in the best possible way.
