June Rapture

June Rapture

In June Rapture club night returns to its spiritual home at the Carlton Club hosting two rooms of music with four DJs and live music from Ajah UK.

The well-established club night was co-founded in January of 2012 by Hazel O'Keefe and Clare Kelly of Dulcet Sounds who wanted to, “create a space that centres itself on women and the queer scene, comedy, live musical talent, DJs and art.”

Previously resident in the Carlton Club in Whalley Range, Rapture has also added dates at the Hough End Social Club around the corner as accessibility for wheelchair users is important to the promoters and Dulcet Sounds' ethos, “Rapture does not exclude anyone, we pride ourselves in having a diverse following.”

Over the last two years Rapture has proved popular with clubbers by remaining sensitive to the musicals desires of the crowd. Each night's set list of music is tailored to what the punters want to hear. DJs Zoe McVeigh (Bollox, BOOM, L//nes), Paula Horatio (Chew Disco), Claud Cunningham (Black Angel) and O'Keefe herself offer a wide variety of tunes from dance to R 'n' B, Motown to rock, soul to funk and electro to pop.

O'Keefe was also part of the line up for Lfest Del Mar, the multi sports event to music, arts and comedy festival, in La Manga, Spain last month.

As well as tailoring the night to the crowd, Rapture also operates an inclusive policy welcoming all regardless of gender or sexuality. The result is one of the most exuberant and fun atmospheres around.

This month is heavy on the music with DJ sets from DJ Hazel, Rach Whatever, Curly and Jae Polo plus Ajah UK, an all female dynamic hip hop/rock act consisting of front women Sam Acquaah and Jaheda, guitarist Lou Anderson, bassist Sarah Kerton and drummer Sophie Wozencraft who are currently making a name for themselves across the UK and beyond.

Ajah UK don’t conform to the hetero-normative perceptions of women and take pride in this. Music gives each band member 'a voice and path to freedom.' Their live performance 'is an epic and fierce collaboration of words, music and entertainment that cuts the bullshit and represents everything they stand for as musicians and women.'

Plus if you haven't had time for your tea or just fancy treating yourself the night lays on food with quality vegetarian and vegan options too.

So this Saturday there's no need to join the weekend scrum in the centre of town simply pop along to the Carlton for some banging live music.

Rapture Club Night, Saturday 7th June, The Carlton Club, 113 Carlton Road, Whalley Range, Manchester, M16 8BE, Doors 7.30 pm, comedy show 8.00 pm, bar until at least 1am. No entry after 11pm. £3 before 9pm, £5 afterwards. Call 07854 346433 for further information.
