Human Rights award winner in the region soon
Frank Mugisha, winner of Robert F. Kennedy Award for Human Rights and Executive Director of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) is coming to Manchester.
In 2006, a desperate gay man living in Uganda wrote an email to Icebreakers Manchester a ‘coming out group’ supporting gay men in Manchester. Although outside the remit of Icebreakers, we responded and have provided support to allow Frank Mugisha to set up Icebreakers Uganda, supporting gay men across Uganda. This group is now a 100 strong volunteer organisation. Frank is coming to Manchester for the first time to meet those who helped and inspired him from 3rd Feb to 5th Feb 2012. He is available to undertake interviews on Saturday 4th February.
Frank has continued his fight against homophobia in a country where ministers are trying to bring a bill that punishes gay men with the death penalty. Everyday Frank risks his life with this fight and was recently awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights award. Living in a country where the national press ‘out’ gay men, homophobic Ugandans have names, addresses and images of gay men, who are often attacked, like David Kato who was brutally murdered in 2010.
Frank is a very passionate and caring individual, please don’t miss this opportunity to speak with him. As the rest of the World turned their back on Frank’s numerous emails in 2006, Manchester rose to the challenge and helped him.
