A rise in Civil Partnerships has been seen across England, Wales and Northern Ireland with a slight decrease in Scotland.

Civil partnerships are up and are now five times more possible than was predicted when the law came into force

The latest data, published by the Office for national Statistics today shows that the number of couples entering civil partnerships in Britain rose by 6% last year to 6,795.

In 2006, the first full year that civil partnerships were legal, more than 16,100 were formed. The numbers dipped to 6,281 in 2009, but rose to 6,795 in 2011. There were slightly more female civil partnerships last year: 3,351 compared with 3,444 male couples.

The latest figures show 554 civil partnerships were formed last year in Scotland, of which the 327 lesbian couples outnumbered the 227 gay civil partnerships. A total of 89 civil partnerships were formed in Northern Ireland – a large drop from the 116 recorded in 2010.
