Canal St chats to Jamie Starboisky

The Queer Media Festival returns to Manchester in November but in a new HOME (see what I did there?).

The festival, which is in it’s third year is a unique approach to storytelling, not just focussing on traditional film, which obviously has a place, but also in performance.

On the weekend of 31st October there will be workshops where participants can make a 60 sec film using purely their mobile phones.

“A phone and passion is all you need” said Queer Media organiser, Jamie Starboisky, when Canal St caught up with him to discuss the forthcoming events. “We are the first public facing festival in the country to do this and it is LGBT themed”.

Starboisky has a list of people who are happy to be filmed and a range of stories, should the muse escape attendees who have 4 days to produce these creations before they are premiered on the big screen in HOME the following week along with short films from LGBT cinema.

The festival proper is on 5th November and is split into two. For the day section, the cinema and also event space at HOME are available allowing participants to flit from panel discussions to screenings and back again should they wish. “We want the festival to be aspirational” says Starboisky “We want people to meet on common ground”.

The second half is purely in the cinema and what a treat the Queer Media team have in store, particularly if there are any Madonna fans out there.

The night will be devoted to vogueing past, present and future with a special performance from House of Ghetto and a rare screening of the recent documentary feature Strike-A-Pose which revisits the seven dancers from Madonna’s iconic Blond Ambition Tour twenty five years after they were thrust into the spotlight with the tour and of course, the notorious documentary, Truth or Dare.

This is not to be missed. If you need to brush up on your Truth or Dare, a venue is to be announced shortly.
