100 events for Manchester Jazz Festival 2017

mjf - the city’s favourite pioneering music event and Europe’s most adventurous jazz festival is back. From Friday 28 July - Sunday 6 August manchester jazz festival celebrates #jazz100 - the 2017 centenary of the first jazz recording - with 100 events (the most ever) in 100 hours of exceptional entertainment taking place in some of Manchester’s premier venues. The programme features new works; local gems and European debuts; young talent via mjf introduces; well-established stars; boundary pushing ideas and special anniversaries.

Highlights include: Dave Maric’s ‘Decade Zero’ with acclaimed piano trio Phronesis and the award-winning Engines Orchestra; the UK debut and sole UK performance of the Joshua Redman ‘Still Dreaming’ Quartet; music from Jazz FM Vocalist of the Year 2016 Lauren Kinsella with Kit Downes, the 2010 Mercury Prize nominee pianist; Andy Scott’s 14-piece sax colossus Group S featuring the stellar talents of John Helliwell, Mike Hall and pianist Gwilym Simcock.

New this year, a luxurious 1920s Salon Perdu Spiegeltent is the star attraction in Festival (Albert) Square. This intimately-circular Art Nouveau venue (one of only a few left in the world) drips ‘Great Gatsby’ glamour - with oak panelling, tête à tête booths and an opulent mirrored bar, it is home to around half of mjf’s gigs. Salon Perdu highlights include:

Pete Lee - ‘The Velvet Rage’: Sunday 30 July 13.00 - 14.00 £8.50 (inc 50p bkg fee) / £10 OTD

Pianist, Pete Lee’s ‘The Velvet Rage’ takes its inspiration from Alan Downs’ book of the same name. Pete’s work celebrates progression in diversity in 2017 with a special dedication to ‘Alan Turing’s Law’, as well as marking the 50th anniversary of the UK’s Sexual Offences Act in July 1967. Catchy melodies and riffs sit alongside ethereal, romantic pieces, brought to life by a dectet of leading jazz players, in-demand pop session musicians and a string section.

Secret Salon - mjf finale: Sunday 5 August 20.30 - 22.00

Magical happenings, music and gregarious goings-on in this non-stop, kaleidoscopic extravaganza – the delights of which will only be revealed on the night!

Round the corner from Albert Square, The Midland hotel and mjf extend their winning formula of exceptional food combined with quality music in a fabulous setting with new jazz brunches as well as jazz afternoon teas.
