Tove Lo at the Deaf Institute

Tove Lo at the Deaf Institute

Tove Lo, Deaf Institute, Manchester, Weds 8th May

The Swedish artist visits Manchester for the first time, hot on the heels of her first UK top ten hit, Stay High (a remix of last year's Habits). Having only enjoyed success in her homeland and Denmark prior to this, it seems 2014 will definitely be a bigger year for her.

Comparisons to Robyn and Lykke Li might seem a little lazy, but it nicely sums up Tove. The vocal on Not on Drugs sounds uncannily like the former. Speaking of vocals, at times she seemed a little drowned out by the band, but the softer numbers showed off the singing ability much better, though my personal highlight was Out of Your Mind. Not having released a full LP yet, Tove Lo has done a good job at establishing a diverse fanbase.

A fun evening at a great little venue, but think Tove Lo could use the charisma of the aforementioned artists and also the energy and stage confidence of fellow Scandanavians, Oh Land and Mø, who both recently played The Deaf Institute. But the songs are great and with more live performing, will hopefully come everything else.
