Funny Girl

Funny Girl

After its smash hit run in London’s famous West end Funny Girl is in Manchester for just one week, a shame as I’m sure everyone would have watched this show at least twice.

Most will associate the lead character Fanny Brice with the performance of the iconic Barbra Streisand. Until Now! And I don’t say this lightly.  From the moment the giant head scarf of scenery (as I called It) reclines, you become instantly aware of what a terrific night and indeed journey you are in for, in the capable hands of Britain’s young Leading lady Sheridan Smith, for such a small figure her acting towers high above

The show runs at 2 hours and 30 mins which flies by as we are treated to an array of famous tunes including “People” and  “Don’t rain on my parade”.

I cannot speak highly enough about the journey this Musical takes you on. The cast as a whole is amazing. Other than Ms Smith, I have to say Rachel Izan who plays Mrs Brice (the mother) is my personal favourite, she has a delicate handling of this role, giving just enough dominance. I would have preferred to see a slightly more lived in Nick Arstein, he comes across a bit wet- more like a Raoul from phantom of the opera than the worldly wide business Hustler. Not enough grit for my liking.

The set is one of  great simplicity, but does the perfect job thanks to projections and on point lighting by Mark Henderson

It really is such a shame that this closes here in Manchester on Saturday, but I’m sure this isn’t the last time we see my favourite Funny Girl
